Course Information

This course applies theories of development, human occupation, models of occupational therapy practice and current evidence in the professional literature to the evaluation and treatment of children from birth through adolescence. Students analyze typical and atypical development, examine the impact of dysfunction on the development of childhood occupations and review legislation regulating practice. Practical experiences include evaluation of children through observation and standardized assessment, formulation of intervention plans and creation of reports documenting performance and progress. Family-centered care, parent-professional collaboration and context of the service delivery system are emphasized throughout the occupational therapy process. Students assess the value of low and high technological devices and environmental modifications for this population.
