Course Information

Spanish in Nebraska is course that explores the presence, history, and social and linguistic experiences of Spanish speaking communities in the United States, particularly in Nebraska. The goal of this class is to broaden students' knowledge of Spanish speaking communities in Nebraska through the exploration of social, demographic, historical, and linguistic factors that shape the experiences of Spanish speakers in the state. Topics will include the demographics of Spanish-speaking communities in the U.S. and Nebraska, Spanish in contact with English, language and identity, and the role of Spanish in public life. This course is designed for students interested in the fields of linguistics, education, sociology, Latino studies, and related fields. No previous linguistic training is required to participate. Note: This course incorporates experiential learning opportunities to improve students' understanding of the presence of the Spanish language and the diversity of Spanish-speaking communities in Nebraska.
